Research Profile

Practice-led research
On AI, human systems and organizational decision-making
My research examines what happens when artificial intelligence becomes part of the systems through which organizations understand people, preserve knowledge and make consequential decisions.
The work grows from more than twenty years of practice across functional HR, workforce architecture, organizational change and enterprise technology. It brings that experience into conversation with cybernetics, behavioural science, economics, epistemology and AI architecture.
A recurring question connects much of the work: How can intelligent systems improve organizational awareness without weakening human agency, judgment or dignity?
This page brings together my latest preprints, working papers, open-access publications and research in development.
Research Interests
My current research is concentrated in five connected areas.
- Human Systems and Artificial Intelligence: How AI changes authority, work design, organizational behaviour and the experience of people inside institutions.
- AI Governance and Explainability: How intelligent systems can remain interpretable, contestable and accountable when they participate in decisions affecting people.
- Conscious Cybernetics: The study of how human and technological systems observe themselves, process feedback and develop the capacity for greater systemic awareness.
- HR Technology and Workforce Architecture: How data, platforms, processes and governance shape opportunity, trust, meaning and dignity within organizations.
- Experiential Software Architecture: How software can be designed around human attention, agency and cognitive reality rather than engagement, extraction or behavioural control.

The Intelligent Finance Function: Why the Future of Financial Decision-Making Is Human, Machine, and Something New Entirely
Working paper · April 2026
Financial institutions continue to invest heavily in technology while facing persistent problems involving cost, fraud, fragmented knowledge and decision accountability.
This paper argues that the next finance function will not emerge from replacing human judgment with automation. It will emerge from a new decision architecture in which people, intelligent systems and institutional knowledge operate as one accountable system.
The paper includes Aurora, an explainable fraud-intelligence reference architecture that combines supervised and unsupervised analysis while preserving evidence trails, deployment control and human review.

Cybernetic Consciousness: A Systems Epistemology for Measuring Awareness
Working paper · October 2025
This paper establishes the philosophical and methodological foundations for treating awareness as a measurable, reflexive property of complex socio-technical systems.
It brings together classical and second-order cybernetics, consciousness studies and Vedantic epistemology to examine how a system observes itself. The paper proposes that organizational awareness can be understood as a recursive process through which a system senses its condition, recognizes its relationship with its environment and uses that knowledge to regulate its behaviour.
The work provides an initial mathematical language for this process, including a state-space representation of awareness, a recursive awareness function and a stability constraint for reflexive feedback.
It is a theoretical foundation rather than a claim of completed empirical validation. Its purpose is to establish a defensible basis for the future measurement and testing of Conscious Cybernetics.

Research in Development
Experiential Software Architecture
This research examines whether software can be designed to respect the interior life of the person using it.
Its reference implementation is Entropy of Us, a local-first iOS instrument for observing recurring patterns in attention, cognitive energy, friction, recovery and response. The application contains no accounts, advertising, behavioural tracking or cloud dependency.
The research explores privacy by architecture, non-coercive interaction design, human observability and the accumulation of dignity debt within digital systems.
Designing the Architecture of Dignity
This work examines HR technology not merely as software, but as an environment in which people work, decide, wait, comply, grow and sometimes disappear from view.
It asks what an organization owes its people when decisions about opportunity, performance, development and belonging are increasingly mediated by technology. The research explores interpretability, institutional memory, human oversight, AI refusal boundaries and dignity as an architectural requirement.
Measuring Systemic Awareness
A continuing research programme is developing the constructs, instruments and validation methods required to examine systemic awareness within organizations. Current areas of development include:
- Enterprise Consciousness Index
- Conscious Metric Inventory
- Meaning entropy
- Epistemic drift
- Dignity debt
- Systemic awareness
- Reciprocity and coherence
- Human and technological participation in organizational learning
These constructs remain at different stages of theoretical development and empirical readiness. Definitions, assumptions and limitations will be published as the work progresses.

Research Approach
I work as a practitioner-researcher. My questions generally begin with patterns encountered in organizational life and are then examined through theory, architecture, prototypes and, where appropriate, formal research methods.
I actively use frontier and locally operated AI models as research instruments. They may assist with literature exploration, alternative interpretations, technical work, argument testing and copy-editing. They are not treated as authors or evidence.
The conceptual framing, professional interpretation and final judgment remain my responsibility. Important claims and citations are checked against original sources wherever possible. No confidential employer, client, employee or personally sensitive information is intentionally included in this work.

Access, Citation and Use
Most preprints and long-form written works are shared freely under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International licence where stated. Selected software repositories may use the MIT License.
Please consult the licence attached to the individual work before reuse. When citing a paper, use the citation information supplied by SSRN, ResearchGate, Zenodo or the DOI record.
The availability of a preprint means that the work can be read and questioned before formal publication. It should not be interpreted as evidence that the work has undergone peer review unless that status is explicitly stated.
An Invitation to Question the Work
This research is offered as a contribution to a field that is still taking shape.
Questions, criticism, replication attempts and competing interpretations are welcome: I am particularly interested in conversations with researchers, practitioners and institutions working across AI governance, HR technology, organizational systems, cybernetics and human-centred design.
If you find an error, an unsupported assumption or a connection that deserves closer examination, I would be glad to hear from you.
